Qobustan- A matriarchal civilization in 8 million B.C
Living in an age when unfortunately gender discrimination against women has touched new lows in human history and we have run short of words to express our grievances over the patriarchy, misogyny and sexism our society promotes, it is hard to believe that there once existed a pre historic community that practiced “matriarchy”.
Now now don’t get me wrong, I am a strong advocate of gender“equality” but human mind works in strange ways and finds the idea of a matriarchal society very intriguing, isn’t that why you clicked on the link in the first place?
Qobustan or more famously known as Gobustan is an Old civilization that dates back to 8 million B.C, located in the south of Baku, along the coast, the site made it to the top of my bucket list as soon as I read up on it.
Im not going to bury you under a pile of historical facts and just highlight the few that convinced me to visit this mystical far away land.
- It was inhabited by actual cave men.
It is no ordinary ancient civilization, it dates back to millions of years and the caves discovered inside the intriguing topography of Gobustan suggest that these people were actual cave men and who wouldn’t want to see what real Flintstones were like 😉 .
2. They were smart for cave men
Not because I’m biased towards my gender and these people treated women well, I think they were smart because they had a language to communicate, had a special mechanism to store water when it rained where they dug up well like holes in the ground, they settled in caves close to the sea and extracted metal for making tools and utensils . Sorry if you were expecting baby elephants as vacuum cleaners but I calibrated their intelligence level on their survival skills :P.
3. Mud Volcanoes
The pre historic settlement is basically just very rocky hills, surrounded by plain, flat, barren land but not very far from Gobustan archaeologists also discovered active mud volcanoes.
It was my first time around these bubbling bodies of freezing-cold mud and gas and the size of the bubbles forming inside reminded me of mud monsters chasing shaggy and Scooby in Scooby doo 😛
It is believed that this mud is highly rich in minerals and since one cannot drown in this dense mixture of mud, tourists like to jump in and treat their skin to a nice relaxing mud bath.
However the image below is not another mud volcano, this a nearby natural pond of clean water where people wash the mud off.
Surprised, how nature has all the necessary arrangements for your big spa date 😛
Disclaimer; The infrastructure around the volcanoes is poor and there is no proper road network therefore you must rent a local car with a trained, Russian speaking (and very Russian looking) driver. However the driver’s accent and the bumpy ride in a car from the communist era will help you imagine yourself as a Russian Villain on a secret mission in James Bond.
